The second battle that we will talk about is the Second Battle of Ypres. The Second Battle of Ypres began on Apr. 22 1915- May 25, 1915. This battle is the first and only offensive of Germany in 1915. This battle began like any other, with artillery fire. This battle took a turn when the Germans launched their secret weapon, roughly 150 tons of chlorine gas. The wind blew this gas roughly four miles across No Man’s Land. This gas destroyed two divisions of French and Algerian soldiers. There was a second gas attack on April 24th, that caused the Allies to retreat to the town of Ypres. This battle resulted in trivial gains for Germans but still holds great significance because it debuted poison gas into World War 1. Canadian soldiers explored a new strategy for protecting themselves from the poison gas, such as urine-drenched handkerchiefs and gas masks. |
